Higher performance hot water supply with a
mains pressure hot water system.
Gone are the days of poor domestic hot
water pressure so typical of household gravity hot water systems.
Provided your incoming mains cold water is supplied at an adequate
pressure you can now obtain the same performance from your hot water
that you previously only enjoyed from the cold tap.
Mains pressure hot water can be achieved
by utilising either an unvented cylinder or a thermal store. This
section focuses on unvented cylinders. For more information on the
function of a thermal store please

Before you consider any mains pressure
system you should
familiarise yourself with how they work. You should also realise
that they are only as good as the incoming mains pressure. If yours is
poor or of a variable nature this may not be the way to go. Mains
pressure systems may not have pumps added to them to improve
performance. Indeed, if you have pumps attached to your present gravity
system you will need to remove them upon conversion. Having said that,
if your mains pressure is good it will outperform many booster pumps so
you will gain performance without the need for a noisy pump that will
inevitably break down at some point.
There are considerations to factor into
your choice of system. Unvented cylinders must be installed correctly
and will require periodic service checks to insure that pressure relief
equipment is working safely. They will however change your perception of
the dreary old hot water cylinder. Please don't hesitate to
call for advice.
Unvented hot water cylinders
It is common to find unvented cylinders
made from stainless steel. There is a single basic reason for this -
cost! Stainless steel is cheaper than copper and by capitalising on it's
higher tensile strength a thinner sheet of stainless steel can be used
than if the cylinder were to be made from copper. Unvented cylinders can
however be made from copper (a preferred material for water storage)
they just cost more.
